Insurance isn't that bad.Yes, The Data Incubator is worth it. At my startup I mostly tried to figure out why our shitty product led to shitty retention numbers and never got to do any real data science. Our company does everything from telematics to ML powered chat bots to neural nets in image recognition to weather prediction to.
I get it, I'm not turned on by the insurance game either, but doing advanced analytics (and eventually DS) is not necessarily going to be underwriting. Higher pay, better benefits, better hours, larger data sets, higher impact, better co-workers. Also, as far as working for a large insurance company, I recently moved from a startup to a large insurance company and it was the best move I've ever made. To me, you have a bird in the hand with the internship vs the "two in the bush" with the DI. I did however get my first DS job in large part because I had the DI on my resume. I was able to get many job interviews out of it but no job offers. Getting into Data Incubator will get you some good extra practice with machine learning, data munging, etc, but the primary reason for accepting the fellowship is to get a job. Do big companies hire from TDI? Or is it mostly smaller companies? And I would like to hear from recent Data Incubator fellows about their job hunt experience after the fellowship. Also, I am an international grad student, hence most smaller companies and start-ups won't hire me for visa sponsorship reasons. Given this, does it make sense for me to give up the datascience internship opportunity and join the Data Incubator? Recent posts about Data Incubator seem to indicate their placement record is not quite what they claim to be. However, I am not particularly excited about the insurance industry in general.

Presently, I have accepted a Datascience internship offer with a large Insurance company in their analytics team, with a very good chance of converting to full time (I won one of their recruitment competitions).

I started actively applying for jobs in January, and till now I have had interview calls only from Geospatial datascience companies.
